Fellow - Community Solutions Program

  • Fellowship Selection: Chosen as 1 of 76 fellows from over 11,800 applicants across 104 countries for the prestigious 2024-2025 Community Solutions Program, posted at the Montrose Center in Houston.

  • Leadership Development: Engaging in a four-month leadership program, enhancing skills in internal and external communications, grant writing, event planning, and logistics coordination, alongside leadership training through the Community Leadership Institute.

  • Project and Networking: Developing a Community Action Project for implementation in Kenya while engaging in cross-cultural exchanges and expanding a global network of emerging community leaders.

Research Fellow -Commons Collective

  • Create executive summaries and research frameworks to streamline the research process, while producing articles on narrative change, digital analysis, and research insights, including mid-term and final report.

Campaigns Fellow - All Out

  •  Campaign Development: Create and execute online LGBT+ rights campaigns in Kenya, using digital tools to monitor impact.

  • Partnership Management: Build and maintain relationships with new Kenyan LGBT+ organisations and support existing ones.

  • Fundraising and Innovation: Manage and promote campaigns and fundraisers, and develop new engagement tactics.

  • Content Creation: Produce content for newsletters and social media to effectively engage with stakeholders.

Rapporteur - Freelance

  • Record meeting proceedings as requested by The International Trans Fund (ITF), INEND, Church World Service (CWS), and GALCK. Work is done to the organisation’s specifications and with the highest level of confidentiality.

Highlights:

Was the rapporteur for the premier National Lesbian, Bisexual, and Queer convening in 2018. This event was a seminal moment in LGBTIQ+ organizing in Kenya

Communications Officer - National Gay & Lesbian Human Rights Commission

  • Ensure successful implementation of NGLHRC’s communication strategies and Support the Executive Director in identifying and developing effective messages, framing and means for delivering them to reach the communication objective

  • Participate in knowledge creation on specific themes within the organisation’s mandates, including content creation for social media, website management, compilation, editing, and dissemination of the organisational newsletter

  • Assist in the planning, preparation, and management of activities and events including meetings, conferences, and webinars

Podcast Producer - Afroqueer, Season 4 Episode 1
  • Assisted with production of the AfroQueer podcast episode including scripting, transcription, and translation

  • Researched potential sources and set up interviews with them

  • Conducted and recorded interviews to a broadcast standard

Highlights:

The podcast episode was featured at Africa Writes Festival in 2021 where I was invited to sit in a panel titled Of Heart & Home: Safe Houses for Queer Africans with Chiké Frankie Edozien

  • Oversaw the goals and timeline of the project's impact campaign. 

  • Engaged in programmatic work including refining the project's Theory of Change, engaging in audience analysis and development, Stakeholder analysis, developing and managing local and national organisational partnerships, engaging in Market Research and Polling Review, and Supporting proposal and report writing

Highlights:

Although the film was banned in Kenya, it was shown in multiple festivals across Africa and was picked up by Lesbians, Gays and Bisexuals of Botswana (LEGABIBO), the premier LGBTIQ+ organisation in Botswana. 

For the Africa-wide release, I organised and coordinated the filming of panels by Kenyan LGBTIQ+ activists

I coordinated the writing and publication of the film’s Discussion Guide

June 2019 - May 2021

Moderator - Love Matters Kenya

  • Worked remotely as part of a global team headquartered in the Netherlands 

  • Was responsible for increasing engagement, stimulating inclusive dialogue, supporting and engaging in content production, editing and dissemination 

  • Developed positive discourse and reduced negative speech on the Love Matters Web Page, Discussion Board, and social media platforms in an informative and non-judgmental while creating a safe and welcoming environment to talk about sex, sexual health and relationship-related issues.

Highlights:

Part of the team that transitioned Love Matters Kenya from a project of RNW Media to a local independent NGO

Communications Consultant - Initiative for Equality & Non-Discrimination

  • Supported INEND’s formulation and implementation of internal and external communications and Advocacy strategies

  • Reviewed and developed communication and media materials for Advocacy and awareness-raising campaigns, in addition to preparing  and editing content for and maintaining INEND’s website and all social media pages

Highlights:

Organised Nation Wide workshops of feminists to aid in the translation of the Feminist Principles of the Internet into Swahili

Managed to get 190,000 organic unique impressions on the organisation’s Twitter Account in December 2018

Coordinated the development of the organisations' new website

Communication Consultant - Internews Europe
  • Trained communications point persons from various organisations from both the private and public sectors. The training was followed up with mentoring sessions on concepts not well understood as well as helping institutions put together implementable communications strategies

Helped Kisumu Medical and Education Trust (KMET) develop an actionable Communications Strategy

Communications Consultant - Astrea Lesbian Foundation For Justice

  • Provided guidance in the research process, helped design workshops, assisted in content development, and provided perspective on the Kenyan context for the Strategic Communication Project.

Highlights:

The project produced Opening Hearts a Messaging Guide for Activists and Allies to Foster Compassion towards Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Intersex Kenyans

Media Liaison - Gay and Lesbian Coalition of Kenya (Now GALCK+)​

  • Developed Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials for GALCK during the strategic litigation period including a media toolkit to structure engagement between the media and the LGBTI community, as well as a complimentary guidebook for LGBTI spokespeople. 

  • Planned, organized, and ran regional workshops with community members and spokespeople as part of the strategic litigation communication plan.

  • Developed and fostered a relationship with local and international journalists with the aim of producing factual and balanced stories on sexual and gender minorities

  • Developed and executed Social Media Campaigns for special days like 16 Days of Activism.

Highlights:

Developed the Spokesperson Handbook, and SOGIE 101 complementary resources to guide LGBTIQ+ Media Advocacy. 

Organised training workshops across the country to educate LGBTIQ+ Kenyans on the rights and privileges promised them under the law.

  • Learned and practised the relevant procedures (using SOPs) in the Biological Reagents Laboratory. Proficiency level up to biosafety level 3 laboratory

Show Host & News Editor - Kenyatta University Radio Services
  • Responsible for running multiple shows as well as news editing. Worked as part of a large and diverse team. Produced and presented a daily show whose main audience was female campus students when the radio station was in its infancy.
